There is something captivating about a good cup of coffee paired with a good book. The only thing better is a city with countless options to enjoy both.
I am a Texas native transported to the Land of Ten Thousand Lakes roughly 11 yrs ago. Life threw a curveball or two, and now I find myself in a city I haven’t taken the time to get to know properly. So, I will put on my favorite pair of boots, grab my current read, and buy myself a cup of coffee!
One of my first explorations was to Spyhouse Coffee off of Broadway in Northeast Minneapolis. Busy road, street parking, but nonetheless my favorite Spyhouse location. (There are a few others). The crowd ranges from younger/hip to older/comfy (this is where I fall!) The line was long but moved quickly and the people watching is great while you wait. The fella behind the counter was great and ready with several recommendations. The place is huge by coffeehouse standards, but seating (indoor/outdoor) was still difficult to secure, though not impossible. Plus when I have coffee and a book, I do not mind hovering until someone leaves 🙂
I paired the hot Spy Girl latte (lavender and honey) with The Angelmaker by Nick Harkaway. The drink was fantastic and perfect for early spring. Not too sweet, which I prefer, but also no issues finding the lavender and honey elements. Highly recommended!
I wish I had loved The Angelmaker as much. This story started off strong and had great characters. However, it became overly detailed and unnecessarily confusing, causing some of it’s strongest character to get lost in odd plot details. With about 75-100 pages left (478 total) the story started to pick up and smooth out again. The ending definitely saves this book. I’m torn on recommending it, but if you are a Harkaway fan, it is worth the read!
I do, however, highly recommend Spyhouse Coffee off of Broadway!

I love this, it is not unnecessarily overly informative but touches on highlights perfectly. My attention span is short at times but you held my interest the whole time. I would really like a cup of what you had now. I look forward to hearing more from you.

I’m really looking forward to seeing more of your pairings! I could talk Twin Cities coffeeshops for days. BTW, if you haven’t been to Cahoots Coffee Bar or Claddagh Coffee, both in St. Paul, they’re two of my favorites. Cahoots does great Turkish/Moroccan coffee & has a cute patio in the back. Claddagh has an amazingly cozy basement & Irish-themed coffee.

I am a Harkaway fan–I think that with every novel he writes, his plots get more linear. So you might like Tigerman better. Of course, his first one is my favorite.

Northern, but the heat feels very southern. It’s the first day of autumn and 95 degrees. But I’m loving it!
